Raku vase made from white Raku Clay and turquoise Raku Glaze

Ceramic Raku vase made from white Raku clay and  turquoise glaze. 

Raku is an ancient Japanese technique that creates vibrant colors and unpredictable results, insuring every vase is unique and one of a kind.

I create a piece on the wheel, bisque fire it and glaze it with a Raku glaze. I then fire it in a gas kiln and  to a 1850 F. It is then rapidly cooled in a sealed garbage can with various organic materials. The burst of flames creates an atmosphere that starves the piece of oxygen, creating a myriad of elemental effects and vibrant colors. Tong marks and irregularities from the burning material enhance the natural beauty of raku.
